Um, it really hasn't been that hard to do since possibly Windows NT came out, and definitely since Windows 2000. All the Win 9x OSes sucked, but the NT-based ones have never had difficulty with massive numbers of apps.

I remember running at least 40 or 50 copies of MS Word on NT 3.1 in 1994 or so.

So, what are the 20 apps ... from left to right? A suggestion (at least I like it), try Transparent Dock (http://www.aquafiles.com/cgi-bin/aquafiles/jump.cgi?ID=696).

I guess I’m mentioning it not because it can’t be done on a Windows machine (I realize that with XP and OS X almost anything can be done on either operating system), but is it really as seamless ... out of the way? It just struck me as a usability shift for me. I just happened to be running 20 applications, not because I was testing it, but it just happened because I needed or wanted those apps running. When I first installed OS X last year when it came out, I performed a search for file of type “application” and opened them all strait from Sherlock. Granted there is no real use for this, and most of the apps are small utilities (as are some in this list) but it’s still amazing compared to the crash prone days of Mac OS 9 and Win 9X that I had to mention it too.

Jish, I went looking for the trasparent dock app after I took the screenshot, and I like it. update: I'm sick of it now, the color of the triangle below the app is hard to see with some colors - the contrasted background is actually useful.

Anil, I hadn't thought about the Word instances, good point. I guess it isn't all that uncommon.

Ok, here are the apps from left to right:

Fire, IE, OmniWeb, Entourage, BBEdit, Interarchy, Photoshop 7, BlogApp, iTunes, SlashDock (not actually running), LaunchBar, Stickies, System Preferences, Timbuktu, Terminal, CPU monitor, GraphicConverter, Project Builder, Interface Builder, Word v.X, Preview, and Text edit. The house is just a folder icon.
