My swelling is not going down on one side and it is still painful compared to the other. I may have s. An extremely painful condition that occurs in about 2-3% of people after complicated lower tooth extraction, that’s me, and last from 10-40 effing days. I hope this goes away by tomorrow. If it doesn’t it means a daily visit to the Dr. with a Novocain shot to go with each treatment where they’ll pack some crap into the open wound after they roto it out with jets of water. Fun. I will be so pissed if I get it because it is more common in smokers, women, people over 30, and people who used straws – I am none of which, and I did everything the Dr. said to do.
Shit that sucks.
I don’t even know where to begin with this one.
A) your a dumbass
B) you have butterpits
C) your way over 30
D) you look damn hot in a wig
and finally…
E) everyone knows you drink your beer through a straw!
But I still love ya

i smoke and i had my wisdom teeth cut out today and i can’t stop smoking so what can i do so i will not get dry sockets can you please help me and tell me what all i can do so i’ll not get a dry sockets i’ll do any thing
Um, stop smoking for a week. Silly.
I think I have dry sockets…Is there anyway I can get rid of it with out going to the dentist again?
Sorry dude, you’re screwed.
Can someone please tell me the systoms of a dry socket? I had my widsom teeth pulled on August 20th and my left loweer jaw still hurts with pain going into my cheek and up to my ear and in my glands on the left side. I did what I was suppose to do I did not smoke for 72 hours. I am in pain. Please advise.
Thank you ,
Jutta
I had five teeth removed and am experiencing more swelling on left side than day of surgery (three days ago). Left side really hurts and right is ok, no pain at all. Anyone else have similiar problems? What can I do?
ok …. all of this dry socket stuff has me scared shitless….i had mine pulled 48 hours ago, i am fine but now after i finally looked it up to see why the dr. told me not to smoke im worried cause i didnt listen. i dont know if this applys but someone told me to bite gauze if you must smoke.
Hello all…Guess what! I have a dry socket on the left side of my mouth, and yes, I was a idiot and smoked like dumbass. It hurts so bad! I can not explain the pain. OKAY, let me put it this way, it is the type of pain that hurts so badly that you want to punch a f’ing wall! I went back to the oral surgeon and he packed it, and now it has not been hurting, but, I am wondering how long this is going to take to heal….SO…when I asked the Doctor, “HOW LONG?” He says, when you quit the smoking, you will heal! Hell no! This is my only enjoyment right now! I heard that gauze only works if you only have like 1-2 teeth pulled on one side. I have been doing it anyway. I had my wisdom teeth pulled over 2 weeks ago, I am sick of the pain, so I guess I am giving in and quitting until it is healed or maybe for good! I will keep you all posted…Please wish me luck, I am going to really, desprately need it!
Good LUCK Toni! You can do it! LOL
I love to smoke too
Ok. I had my wisdom teeth pulled on Oct 8th. My mouth still hurts really bad on the left side only? Dry Socket? Hope not. This is the wrost pain I have ever been in. Any advice besides pills on how to take the pain away., I go back to the surgeron on the 17th. Please help!!
AHHHH!!! dry sockets!!! They scare me soo much!!! I had my wisdom teeth pulled 6 days ago…im in no pain anymore..but my left side is still swollen and my right is almost back to normal….whats up with that.?? I do heat and ice…and neither has brought my left side down! Does anyone know what to do.??..Help Me!!
I had my wisdom teeth extracted on Oct31 (halloween) and I was that lucky kinda bastard who got 4 dry sockets (aprox odds 1/10000) and I dont even smoke.
Okay everyone, I had a molar extracted like 3 days ago, and I got a dry socket. It is sooo painful! Anyway, the dentist told me that if I must smoke to bite on gauze adn then smoke. Bad advice, cause I still got the dry socket! And also she told me to only wait 24 hours before smoking! From what I hear from everyone else, it suppose to be atleast 72 hours. Anyway, there is no way that an avid smoker can go 3 days without a puff.
I had to go today to get mine packed. Needless to say, it still hurts. The numbness is going away from the novacaine and it is starting to hurt yet again. I thought I would feel better after that, whats the deal?
i had oral surgery on nov. 5 to remove one wisdom tooth. I also don’t smoke, didn’t drink through a straw, and didn’t drink any soft drinks and still got dry sockett. i am in excrutiating pain and have been since the night of the surgery. i went to my regular dentist and he put some meds in it and it seemed to work for about 2 days, then quit. it has now been 10 days since the surgery and still no relief. will it ever get better?
Advice? WEAR A PATCH!
hey everyone!! i think i have dry sockets. my teeth are throbing abd my jaw hurts so bad!! its only my right side. the dr. said to spray salt water in the hole and see if it works butit hasent. i aslo have this really bad taste in my mouth and i think it smells too!! what should i do. im to scared to go to the dr. again. i call him like every day!!! any solutions???
i just had my wisdomteeth and a back molar pulled like 2 hours ago and my chin and my lower lip are numb how long am i goin to have to wait untill i can actually drink something ?? im still all bleeding …it wont stop …someone tell me PLEASE..
I have dry socket on my right upper jaw. It is VERY VERY painful. I went to the dentist and he gave me a shot, cleaned it out with warm water and peroxide. He then packed it with gauze and stitched it over. This was yesterday, and I am still in alot of pain. I am taking pain killers that he doubled and it still doesn’t help much. Does anyone know how long the severe pain lasts???
Just an idea…for the smokers.
As a smoker, after having my teeth removed, I was so hi on the medicine doctor gave me that I did not care to smoke that day. After that I tried smoking by placing something over the holes that will not remove the bloodclot after you take it out and very gently inhaling without closing my lips all the way, or painfully inhaling through my nose.
Yes I know, but as and addict to nicotine I couldn’t do any better.
I did not have any problems. Everything healed fine.
the left side of my mouth still hurts like a mother and i noticed that where it is pink and looks like it is healing on the right side, it is beginning to form some white-ish stuff on the bottom right side of my mouth…any idea what that may be?
it is normal healing, dont make the mistake I did and rinse it out vigorously thinking it was food. Now I have dry sockets because I went crazy… TRYING TO ClEAN OUT THE WHITE STUFF.
I just had my wisdom teeth out and so far no dry sockets. After reading everyone’s comments about dry socket I sure hope it doesn’t happen to me. Thanks for the tip about the white stuff. I found myself trying to clean the white stuff out of my sockets thinking it was food. Now I know it is the natural healing process. Thanks a lot:)
OK. Ive smoked over a pack a day for about 6 years now. I am on day 6 of quiting for those of u who said its impossible for a normal smoker to go 3 days, are u serious. Not difficult. Try actually giving an effort.
So this is the place where us dry socket people come to party huh?! I had all four wisdoms removed 8 days ago. I got a dry socket in my bottom right. Not much fun. I had to go and get it packed. It has since felt a lot better. How did mine happen? My ma gave me a cup w/ a straw after my surgery, and I sucked that blood clot right out! Anyone recieve packing, and not have to return to the dentist to have it removed? I’m wondering if I should go back in, or if it will just work itself out. -jeff
Does smoking marijuana also cause dry scokets or just nicotine? Please email me if you know. euthanasia3002@yahoo.com
hey i just had my teeth pulled like 4 hours ago, and im in a little pain but not unbearable enough to cry over, actully my doctor gave me perkasets (i dont know how to spell it) but thats a good question jacob… about the marijuana thing…. im gonna look into that… cause we all know pot makes the pain go away! dec. 22nd, 1:31pm
I had my upper right wisdom tooth pulled yesterday. I smoke and hopefully putting gauze on it and slowly rinsing with salt water will help me not get a dry socket anyone else use this method?
Yeah, does smoking pot effect dry sockets if I only inhale, w/o a “sucking” motion?
Wow, I’m glad that I found this site. I had only one upper wisdom tooth removed and it was not impacted. I’m not female and I’m not over 30, so the odds of me getting dry socket are not that bad. one thing, I smoke. last time I used the gauze to cover the socket, there was blood on the gauze. I hope that I didn’t pop the blood clot that way. I had my tooth taken out yesterday morning. and I have absolutely no pain. I was even eating solid food last night chewing with only the left side of my mouth. I had a few cigarettes today without the gauze on, and Christmas Eve is tomorrow. I hope i don’t get it from drinking and smoking a little more. Does anyone have any advice on drinking and dry socket?
Holy Crap!!!! I had five teeth pulled, three of them wisdom teeth. All are fine except the bottom right, I am in CONSTANT pain 24 hours a day. Anywhere from the dull ache at the spot of the tooth to the glands in my neck, even hurts all the way up the side of my head sometimes. It has been a week since my surgery but the dry socket did not hit until the third or fourth day after. I have screwed myself since I still smoke, but I tell you what the pain is enough to get anyone to quit. This is the most pain I have ever felt, hopefully it will end soon. It is scary to read that this can last over a month! If you are going to get teeth pulled and you smoke do yourself a huge favor and quit first.
Why is it that the wounds are not stitched up? Why leave a hole and allow it to heal like that? I’m thinking that leaving a hole is inviting bacteria as well as welcoming a dry socket. So many people seem to get dry sockets even when they’ve done everything to prevent it. What is the deal pickle?
Hi guys,
I 4 teeth pulled out for braces on Dec. 22. I was in horrible pain up until Friday Dec. 26 when I finally called the ER dentist. Well, I have 3 dry sockets and he only packed 2 of them because I still need a side of my mouth to eat. It’s is absolutely horrible!!! Christmas was so sad for me and very painful. A hot pad on your mouth feels a little better. I wish I could just go on an IV and have him pack all of them. Dentist also said it would take up to 40 days or more for them to heal. YIKES! I’m praying and praying. He didn’t tell me though not to drink from a straw and I did. He also didn’t even ask if I was on birth control, which I am. I had my wisdom teeth pulled 12 years ago and it wasn’t at all like this. I needed the teeth pulled to make room because I will be getting braces at the ripe old age of 32. I reallly regret it so so bad!!
Like many of you I just got my wisdom teeth removed, Dec. 31. Like a lot of you, also, I am in the supposed lowest risk group for developing dry sockets (non smoker, non birth control)…However, to my great delight, I sprung out of bed two days after the surgery with the most excrutiating pain I have ever felt in my life. After a day and a half I finally got into the denstist, to get packed etc. This is horrible, I wish I never had my wisdom teeth out.I also wish I had a morphine drip IV OR SOMETHING TO STOP THIS PAIN!!!
I just had 10 teeth and 1 wisdom tooth pulled. I kept the gauze in for 2 days,(so I could Smoke). And it seems to work for not getting dry socket. As far as the smoking pot thing, Who knows. But the best way not to get it is follow directions!!!!!!
I had a lower right tooth out on wednesday by friday i was back at the dentist with dry sockett, she did not give me novocaine she cleaned it out and packed it and gave me some metronidazole tablets and charged me even more money I am really fed-up
All I really want to know is if I can smoke my damn joint or not? I’m pissed off because the freakin’ pills aren’t worth a shit. So, can I smoke weed or not?
There is absolutely no evidence that smoking or drinking from a straw contributes to dry sockets. This is based on logical thought, not empirical evidence. The theory is that sucking pops out the soft clot.
There is very strong EVIDENCE that very strong sucking may have some impact but the circulatory effects of smoking and the fact that more than 60% of smokers SPIT while smoking may contribute more to the problem. Also not keep gauze in long enough etc. etc.
Spitting, rinsing roughly and brushing the site are more likely to cause the problem.
But hey, its your pain, your mouth and your potential abscess chewing your jaw in half which are far less frightening the notion of playing it safe and going on the patch for 48 hours.
BTW I had two yanked this afternoon.
Might I also say it is amusing to see everyone whining so much, as a social scientist I can assure you all that catharsis does little more than increase awareness and anxiety about something, and with it, pain. Go get your minds off of the pain and stop spending so much effort attempting to obtain morphine….
HI! Yes I do believe I have dry scocket! I had my lower left wisdom tooth pulled friday 6-22-07. I made it through the weekend with little or no pain. Then at work on monday the pain realy started to hit me. Yes like an idiot I smoked. Like an hour after surgury. I didn’t suck and didn’t drink through a strawl. I think I should have put a nicotine patch on friday! I thought everything was ok because they say the odds of getting dry socket are slim, but in the waiting room at the oral surgeon friday within 45 minutes two people came in for DRY SOCKET!!! I am going to deal with the pain and slow down on smoking and try to find some ideas on the web. Un like everyone else on here I will keep you posted!! DRY SOCKET SUCKS!!!
yeah i recently had my wisdom teeth pulled, drank some energy drink and had some maceroni (velveeta shells ftw) and now i have something sticking out of the hole, i thought it was maceroni so i tried taking it out..bad move..its gauze….im an idiot
Don’t know if anyone is still reading this thread but I figured I’d drop in a line and hopefully get some advice.
I just had my lower right wisdom tooth removed, and well, basically I’ve been smoking all day, with gauze on and off.
Then, I came to the frightening conclusion that I was being a moron and decided to stop.
I am now lightly biting on a wet teabag to hopefully form a clot and have just taken my anti-biotic again hoping it will fight infection over night.
I DON’T WANT DRY SOCKET!
I’m quitting as of NOW and will just be going cold turkey.
I intended on being home for the next 3 days screwed out of my mind on vicodin anyhow, I’ll be okay.
I smoked literally moments after surgery, and have been smoking all day, probably about 10-12 cigarettes have been smoked since I got out.
I hope I can prevent what I may have caused.
How should I go about preventing it from here?
I don’t have it yet, but I smoked quite a bit today.
PLEASE HELP!
Haha… You ppl are as stupid as me. Been a smoker for 10 years… Was recently told I may have oral cancer. I’m 27. Just had biopsies taken from 3 sites in my mouth… 2 gums, 1 larynx. If you’re reading this, do yourself the favor and quit now… Unless you truly want to die, in which case you should find another way to do it (google “oral cancer” pics if you don’t get it). Honestly quitting was easier than I thought… Smokers get cravings too… They just feed em and consequentially have them more often than quitters. Aside from the sucking, the detriment to your circulatory system caused by smoking prevents healing… Especially in the mouth. So yes, quit the weed too. Make butter if you *have* to get high. Trust me though, you are MUCH more capable of quitting than you think. Good luck and godspeed… You have the strength to weather the *pain* of cravings… And so much more.
Well Chris whatever happened? did you develop a dry socket? I had 1 wisdom tooth pulled yesterday. I felt fine within hours and started smoking but while biting gauze.
Today Im sore but Im hoping that is just normal and that I should take more pills. From what I can tell my clot is still in place. I dont smoke alot but I dont really want to quit either. I know how stupid that sounds. Im sure if I develop a DS I will totally regret smoking. Sometimes people tend to feel like they are invincible and that all of these horror stories wont happen to them.
I got all four wisdom teeth taken out and i smoked out of bowl, threw my nose, and i still got dry socket. the single worst pain i ever experienced, i still have it and it take weeks of painfulness to even get close to healing. so be careful about weed and wisdom teeth kids.
i got all 4 wisdom pulled thursday at 8am. it’s now tuesday afternoon ( 5 days later ). Can i smoke yet???
I just had a shattered premolar removed this morning, well, 12 hours ago now. I was only in pain for a few hours, the bleeding hasn’t totally stopped yet, but there is a nice little clot in the hole and very minimal throbbing when drinking water.
I was told not to smoke, but that drinking through a straw was okay. I was kinda worried about this whole dry socket thing until I found this site http://www.americasdentalbookstore.com/articles/OralSurgery/DrySocketPrevention.htm It’s like a case study by a dentist who found that smoking and using a straw in fact do not seem to be the cause of dry socket, but the amount of pressure applied by the denist when moving the tooth, which actually sounds quite logical. I have had about 3 smokes since my removal, using a piece of guaze to cover the hole and drawing very carefully.
Anyways, if you are a little concerned about dry socket I’d suggest finding a gentle dentist first, and maybe get someone to have a check on the area to make sure they can see the clot.
If I get throught this one without the dry socket, I have to go back to get another shattered tooth removed. If not, I’ll be finding a new dentist!
Wish me luck!
I just had my upper left wisdom tooth taken out and havnt smoked anything since, but am trying to get my hands on some weed to relaxx me, haha but after reading all this im having second thoughts. But fark a cone would go down very nicely
Ok so i got my top and bottom wisdom teeth out on the left side of my mouth three days ago and am dying to smoke as i am a Chain smoker and It has been hell for me not smoking. But Anywayz The sitches Hurt like a Bitch and my jaw is stiff and kinda of hurts and i was scared thinking it was dry socket but i looked online and Everyone says if theres white stuff in or around the hole its healing and dont touch it. another Nasty fact i have bad breath now and still am Clueless as t if i have dry socket i mean do you know after three days or longer? and when the hell can i have a SMOKE? lol any advice would help thanks
how many days after smoking do you think the risk of getting dry socket is gone??
had a tooth pulled friday, am on birth control…
Had one smoke yesterday and really wanting another one now!
Hey all. I just had 3 wisdom teeth and 2 broken molars removed today. My Oral Surgeon told me the No Smoking or Sucking from a Straw thing too. He said 5-7 days.
I’ve done some research and found out that smoking and straw sucking have absolutely no cause on Dry Socket! Smoking doesn’t stop the blood flow to your mouth(it might not be the cleanest thing to do…LOL) and sucking up a blood clot will cause bleeding, hence will clot again!
Dry Socket is now being related to the force used on the extraction. If your dentist/surgeon puts their foot on your chest and yanks…you’ll get Dry Socket. If they carefully cut away bone and gum till the tooth lifts out…you’ll be cool! Some really good articles on line now, so do some checking!
By the way, I’m a smoker but I’m still not sure whether I want to test these new theories. Haven’t smoked yet but its only been 12 hours!
Cheers All and hang in There!
Had an extraction of a tooth that was mostly filling and little tooth. None the less the tooth shattered when he tried to pull it. He took the rest out in pieces. He put so much down pressure force with his instruments my face felt like a G force of nine. I got dry socket. I believe this is related to “pressure of the extraction”. I don’t smoke etc. This blog site has been very informative. Thanks…. Dan
Ok…us cigarette smokers can really push the limits. I had one wisdom tooth pulled this last Tuesday morning. Of course, I was told not to use a straw, not to smoke, blah, blah, blah. I respect that, but as a smoker it has been a rough 3 days. I have cheated and have had a few cigarettes (which is great compared to my many a day). I have been placing moistened gauze near the extraction site to try to block off any smoke and/or suppress sucking the blood clot out, and have taken light puffs. I have had no pain, but then again I am being very careful. I think that truly it all comes down to each person and how we all will heal differently. Take your risks, but understand the penalties.
I have that gongenitve gum disease crap, and my teeth began falling apart at an young age(18), They were weak and brittle, and would just chip and shatter against food and a tongue piercing that I was stupid enuogh to keep in for ten years. Needless to say I’ve had a ton of extractions. My wisdon teeth came in crooked and I did nothing about it, which appaently wrecked my others pressing them into each other. I have a pretty solid case of Anxiety/Panic attack disorder that I’ve basically come accustomed to over my life, but naturally for me, I smoke a
lot. Anyway, I’ve had six teeth removed from my mouth, mostly molars on the bottom. Both of those times, I cut dowm, but still smoked steadily after. Never had a dry socket. Here’s my question though, do dry sockets occur on the upper jaw, as well? And, has anyone ever had an abscess that got so out of control, that It caused one of your eyes to swell shut? I have, and the pain was miserable, I was wondering how it compares to the pain of dry socket.
OK, I got all my wisdom teeth that were impacted pulled a week ago today. I have a small mouth, big teeth, and some of them broke when they were taking them out so needless to say I have been in a lot of pain and swollen. The only thing, they had to give me double the amount of anesthesia to put me asleep . ? I guess from not being able to eat, a couple cocktails, and getting so much anesthesia I was nauseas, the next night I woke up throwing up. I didn’t know at the time but I’m sure that’s what gave me dry socket, I didn’t even know I had DS I just thought it hurt so bad because all of the trauma. I was being tough just taking the pain cause I didn’t know. Everybody said go back to the doctor, so I did 6 days later. To all of you that are just trying not to be a baby and go back to the doctors, go back, you probably have dry socket! They cleaned it out and packed it and they’ve changed the packing twice already. It helped so much!! What was I waiting for! I’ve been doing everything I’m suppose to do and I want to smoke some greenery NOW! I can’t wait any longer! I want to know for sure that it won’t make the DS worse. Guess I’ll just have to test it out, cause the percocets are worth shit! It takes an hour for them to hit you and then it only works for about a hour. I get the packing removed again for good in 4 days, but then what’s up with that, then they’re not even gonna sew it up and I have to have a big food collecting hole there until who knows when. Wisdom teeth suck, they weren’t even bothering me I just didn’t want them coming in making my straight teeth, crooked. Braces hurt less than this but I wouldn’t want to have to do that over again either! It’s 420 ! Wish me luck!
hihi. yeah, i got all 4 wisdom teeth out last wednesday. i’m 18 years old. i did not do anything the doctor told me not to do…but i do have 2 dry sockets. he cleaned them out today with water-mine weren’t infected-but he gave me an antibiotic. my socket had food stuck in them, gross. i just want the pain, swelling and HORRRRIBLE taste to go away asap. how long does it usually take to start eating regular food again?
I just got all 4 of my wisdoms taken out… the medicine i was given sucks my ass, 5 hours later took a G-bong hit, woke up today, teeth felt fine, no pain at all. no swelling as well… derek i think im gonna go with your theory… cause it says i can smoke
…. smoke weed that is… cigs are gross, dont pay ppl to kill you!!!!… and now on day 2 after the operation, im gonna go sit in a bathroom while my friends smoke a huge blunt and hot box, and Ill just breath it in… good day.
Hi just thought I’d weigh in with my extraction experiences and smoking. There is much advice for if you are going to smoke anyway. I had 5 removed 3 years ago (including wisdoms). I managed not to smoke (herb) for the first day, but smoked lightly the 2nd day , and more the third. I did so WITH gauze in the socket, and trying not to ‘pull’ to hard. I ended up with a slight case of dry-socket for 2-3 days. Warm salt water rinse throughout the day and before bed helps alot! Also I’ve been looking up anti-edemics (swelling reducers). On that list (among other foods) are, pineapples, strawberries, and ginger. I have been having some tasty smooties! Happy healing!
I will never go back to the oral surgeon I had remove my tooth two weeks ago. First, the guy didn’t even tell me what he was doing, he and his assistants just kind of swarmed me and I felt brutalized. He had a really hard time getting my cracked molar out. My daughter had two wisdom teeth removed the same day, and the dental assistants told me that I would have a lot rougher recovery than she did because the removal of my molar was so traumatic. They were right! Day 2 after surgery, I had a reaction to the Vicodin and had to quite taking it. Day 3, dry socket. I have had the socket packed twice already, but am still in pain daily, sometimes so bad I can’t help but make little “pain sounds” which is embarrassing since I have to work for a living. The pain wears on you after you’ve been in pain for several days!!!
I just had 2 bottom impacted wisdom teeth removed. The right one went perfectly well, but the left one… it is the worst pain I have ever felt! The pain just keeps coming from my left side to my ear, to my neck… I can still feel it through the painkillers! They said it will take 1-4 weeks to recover.. This is the worst pain I’ve ever dealt with in my life..I can’t even fall asleep at night cos of being woken up by the pain! I’ve been doing everything the oral surgeon told me to do.. I do fit in the female category and I’m 29. Maybe that’s why.
I had surgery to remove the root from a tooth that disintegrated (!!) underneath a crown, and also to put bone grafting stuff in there – he stitched it up, sent me home – 2 weeks ago. Well, I was in so much pain for the first week, I had to go back 2 times. NOW – for the past week, I have a nasty smell coming from the site of the root extraction. What the hell is it??? It’s disgusting, and I can’t stand it. Do I need to call the Dr.?? HELP!
I had three impacted wisdom teeth removed and the # 4 tooth at one time.which was this pass monday morning.it’s now two days later.i’ve been smoking lightly sense the surgery. i can honestly say i haven’t had any major pain, but i’m reallllllllly swollen, keeping an ice pack on both sides of my face isn’t doing the job of keeping the swelling down, not being able to eat any solid foods has been the most painful. I pray to God that i don’t wake up to ds.I’ve noticed today that the white ish film had developed in the inner lining of my jaw.hopefully it’s healing properly. all i want is the swelling to go away……..how long will it take?..
I had a tooth pulled, and because of the difficulty getting it out, i had a follow up a 2 weeks later. I followed the directions, I don’t smoke, and got a dry socket anyway. It hurt a little bit, but i did not even know i had one. No way it is the worst pain i have ever had. They packed it with the oil and material, and no pain at all, but still definitely not the worst pain ever. Wouldn’t even rank it top ten.
YES I’M A DENTIST
What to expect for smokers, sorry to say but you will have to quit for a min of 48 or 72 hours just to be on the safe side, MORTIN IBUPROFEN tablets 300 mg ever 5 or 6 hours for the pain should do the trick, the inflammtion is what is causing you pain and MORTIN does the trick, DO NOT USE tylenol because it thins the blood and you may not be able to form a blood clot which will lead to dry socket. The more complicated your extraction will mean you will have more pain (neck jaw and throat pain are perfectly normal) and you may also feel and increase in pain during the first 3 days this is normal. Don’t use straws, don’t spit, the idea is not to create suction in the mouth so the clot doesn’t come out. For the hardcore smokers you can try after 24 hours but be extremly careful and very gentle puffs, after every cigarette for the first 3 days you must do a salt water rinse, 15% the amount of water in the cup, make sure the water is warm, not hot, do not swish it around simply move your head back and forth and let is fall out of your mouth, DO NOT SPIT IT OUT, do this for about 5 mins, no brushing with tooth paste for 24 hours and when you do it be VERY CAREFUL if you cannot get to a tooth because you might hit the extraction site “LEAVE IT” for the time being, NO MOUTH WASH because it may destroy the clot, do salt water rinses for the first 5 days after that you should be fine. as for a time lapse the gauze will take anywhere from 1 – 2 hours to form some cases it may be longer or shorter, you can drink water immediately wait atleast 6-8 hours before eating anything ( i high recommend jello or something that requires no chew for the first 24 hours ) then after the 24 you should be able to eat soft foods (KD, Mashed Potatos, etc.) NO POP, NO CHIPS, NO HARD CANDY. during the 24-48 period you may notice the clot has gotten smaller, sinking, or pushed together and you have white visiable white stuff ( the white stuff is puss and you will probley be able to taste it ) this is what we want to see, it means the infection is draining (this is for people who have had teeth removed because of an abscess tooth) and by day 3 you smokers can smoke till you hearts content. as for marijuana smokers you must wait till the whole is visible and you can see the skin formed in the hole at the bottom before you can smoke so you will be awaiting a min of 1 week. the reason is that marijuana drys out the new cells trying to form in the mouth the area must stay moist to proceed with healing. for all the moron kids on here telling you they smoked right after the extraction is a lie and i have had alot of idiots in my practice coming in with dry socket and finding out that they smoked a joint 9 hours after their extraction.
I think i have answered most of your questions, hopefully it helps.
I smoked a joint as soon as I got home from the dentist, about 30 min after the procedure. I kept moist gauze in the 2 holes (On Mon the removed a molar and another tooth.. there’s a tooth between the 2 recent holes from the extractions) I have done this with every extraction or procedure I have ever had. (My 2 wisdom teeth and 5 more) And I am lucky enough to have NEVER gotten dry socket. I also smoke cigarettes, those I was much more careful about, smoking as little as I could to get through the first 24 hours. I suppose I should have not done that, but Marijuana is the only medicine that I use, so no Vicodin, Codiene or anything but Ibuprofen (MOTRIN. not MORTIN) I am not so sure that guy is a dentist. But he gives good advice none the less. Good Luck to you all, Peace Love and Happinss,
Chronic Christiana
P.S. The only thing worse than teeth pain is bone pain and kidney stones. Not even labor come close, I have had 2 kids with no ‘drugs’. I would know!!
